The pandeiro is one of the most iconic instruments in Brazilian music. At first glance, it resembles a tambourine, but its sound, technique and musical role are entirely its own. Made with a wooden or synthetic frame, a single drumhead and metal jingles known as platinelas, the pandeiro produces an astonishing range of sounds, from deep bass tones to sharp, crisp accents.
Played using a combination of finger, thumb and palm strokes, the pandeiro allows a single musician to create complex rhythms that can sound like an entire percussion section. It is at the heart of many Brazilian musical traditions, including samba, choro, capoeira, coco and forró, where it provides both groove and expression. Equally at home accompanying a singer, leading a roda de samba or performing intricate solo passages, the pandeiro is celebrated throughout Brazil for its versatility, creativity and unmistakable swing.
We also provide pandeiro lessons and run percussion courses with the best tutors in the world. Check out our workshops pages for more info.
