A truly great and traditional instrument from Brazil's rodas de samba.
Sharp slaps, beautifully distinctive, rounded open tones, all you need from a repique de anel.
The repique de anel is a unique instrument that brings together several essential rhythmic elements in a single, versatile package. Its shell is played with the fingers, often enhanced by a ring (anel) worn on one finger, or by small coins attached to a structure hanging from the rim—or even stuck directly to the shell. These additions create a bright, metallic “click” that forms the foundation for variations of the telecoteco rhythm.
Beyond this signature sound, the hands can explore a wide range of tones—open and muted, taps, slaps, harmonics, and any creative variations you want to experiment with. In many ways, the parts it plays mirror those of the surdo de terceira (3rd surdo) in a samba school bateria, adding depth and texture to the ensemble.
The instrument offers flexible playing positions: it can be mounted on a snare stand and played from one end, or rested on the player’s lap, with one hand striking the shell and top head while the other focuses on the bottom head. This adaptability makes the repique de anel a dynamic and expressive tool for rhythm exploration.
This interplay creates a rich, layered texture that can cut through the samba ensemble while complementing its groove. By balancing bright, percussive accents with fuller, open tones, the repique de anel bridges rhythm and melody, responding to other instruments, accentuating syncopations, and driving the samba forward with energy, sparkle, and personality.
